Move over Marvel action figures, Rainbocorns and novelty socks. This year, you might be getting a toilet for Christmas.

That's at least what international water and toilet not-for-profit WaterAid is hoping Australians will embrace this festive season.

The not-for-profit organisation is inviting parents to forgo the latest gadget and office staff to be more creative with their Kris Kringle gifts, in favour of pipes, toilets, or taps from WaterAid's online Gifts for Life catalogue.

The proceeds from buying a $13 Christmas card, for instance, can help WaterAid deliver piped water to a village, a $26 card can give children safe toilets at their school, while a $100 card can train a woman to maintain the village water supply.

WaterAid's online Christmas store also includes a novelty pop-up poo card for $12, for mates who prefer to give each other crappy gifts every year.

Rosie Wheen, WaterAid Australia Chief Executive, says:

"Christmas is a wonderful opportunity to show our love for our family and friends, and nothing says 'I love you' like a toilet. It's the perfect gift for that family member who is always difficult to buy for, or that friend who already has it all.

"Christmas is also a time to be generous towards those who unfortunately don't have the same basic services most of us have here in Australia. There are still 785 million people worldwide who don't have clean water at home, and over 2 billion people living without a decent toilet of their own. Together, we can change this."
