We want your views on managing our pets

Brimbank Council is keen to hear from everyone in the community on how we can continue to improve on managing cats and dogs across Brimbank.

The community's views and what they believe are the main issues and top priorities when it comes to taking care of pets, will help inform an update of the Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP).

Under the Domestic Animals Act 1994, every four years, councils must prepare a DAMP which guides councils' programs, services and strategies on managing dogs and cats in their municipalities.

Brimbank City Council is due for a renewed DAMP next year following its last plan which was implemented on 21 November 2017.

The DAMP seeks to balance the needs of pet owners, the broader community and the animals that share people's lives. The programs and activities outlined in the Plan will be developed with the aim of encouraging people to enjoy their pets within a framework of responsible ownership.

The consultation invites not only pet owners but also those who don't own pets to submit their views on pet management via an online survey at yoursay.brimbank.vic.gov.au

Residents are encouraged to invite friends and family living in Brimbank to also complete the survey.

Views can be provided over a four-week period, ending on 26 September. A report based on the feedback received will then be prepared and presented to Council along with a Draft Domestic Animal Management Plan.

The draft plan will be released for community feedback later this year.

Quotes to be attributed to Brimbank Mayor Cr Ranka Rasic:

"Council is keen to hear from pet owners and those of you who don't own pets about what you think are the important issues affecting the way we take care of our dogs and cats in Brimbank.

"The DAMP is about making sure that every pet owner understands what is needed to look after their pets responsibly.

"I would really encourage all of you to go online and let us know your views via the online survey. Don't forget to invite your friends and family to do the online survey because pet management is an issue that affects all of us."
