Western Highway Level Crossing Closure: Rail Maintenance Works To Impact Local Traffic

Ararat Rural City Council wishes to notify residents of upcoming rail maintenance works at the Western Highway level crossing in Ararat, scheduled from 10:00pm Saturday, 22 November until 6:00pm Sunday, 23 November 2025, weather permitting.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) will be undertaking essential track maintenance to ensure the safety and reliability of the rail network.

During this period, the level crossing will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians for the full duration of works. Preparation activities and material deliveries have already commenced, with day and night shifts occurring ahead of the main works. Site clean-up will continue during regular construction hours after completion.

Traffic controllers will be present to assist with local access, and every effort will be made to minimise noise, dust and light impacts through targeted mitigation measures such as watering work areas, positioning light towers away from residences, and limiting machinery use.

Dr Tim Harrison, Chief Executive Officer of Ararat Rural City Council, said, "Residents can be assured we are committed to keeping the community informed and to working closely with ARTC to ensure these necessary improvements proceed as smoothly as possible. The safety of road users and pedestrians remains our priority, and we thank everyone for their patience and understanding during this temporary closure."
