Western Sydney Midwifery Group Practice Expanded

NSW Gov

An establishment of a Midwifery Group Practice model at Auburn Hospital is providing more women and families in western Sydney access to high-quality, continuous midwifery care throughout pregnancy and beyond.

The new team at Auburn Hospital includes four dedicated midwives, with capacity to care for up to 144 women per year.

Under the model, women receive care from a known primary midwife throughout their pregnancy, labour, birth, and up to two weeks after birth. The midwives work as part of a team to ensure support and backup arrangements are in place, as needed.

So far, 138 women have chosen to take part in the program, and 66 babies have been born.

The Minns Government's 2025-26 Budget included $44.8 million to increase access to midwifery continuity of care models.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Health Ryan Park:

"We want all women in NSW to have access to respectful, evidence-based maternity care, and the establishment of the Midwifery Group Program at Auburn Hospital is an important step in achieving this aim.

"I'm thrilled that more women in Western Sydney can now access midwifery continuity of care, if they choose to.

"Of the women who access this program, nearly half were born overseas. These expectant mothers reflect the kaleidoscope of cultural diversity living in the Auburn area."

Quotes attributable to Acting Midwifery Manager Auburn Hospital Tracy Paterson:

"Midwifery continuity of care is one of the most important factors in improving outcomes for women and babies. Our team is excited to bring this model to the Auburn community.

"Having a known midwife walk alongside a woman through her pregnancy journey builds trust, enhances communication, and ultimately results in more positive birthing experiences.

"No matter a woman's journey, especially for those affected by female genital mutilation or cutting, we are committed and proud to provide compassionate care, ensuring the best possible birth experience as women welcome their beautiful babies into the world."

Quotes attributable to Rebecca, who had her baby through the Midwifery Group Program at Auburn:

"Not only was my birth experience professionally handled and pleasant, I also had a great experience in the pre-appointments and felt safe and confident with my midwife team.

"They are an asset to the hospital, and I look forward to my next pregnancy where I will be requesting them again.

"I highly recommend both the midwifery program and Auburn Hospital to all my friends and family."
