Cycling and recycling are set to ride in tandem as Lake Macquarie City Council wheels out the ultimate circular economy event on Sunday 30 November at Speers Point Park.

The inaugural Great Bicycle Recycle is a community bike repair and recovery event encouraging locals to dust off their bicycles for repairs or replacement before summer hits.

Free 15-minute bike checkups, bike maintenance workshops, drop-off services for old or unused bicycles, pre-loved bike sales, live music from Deejay Mathmatics and more are in store, with expert help from Revolve Recycling and Cheeky Bikes.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said fixing or donating old or unwanted bikes would divert waste from landfill and give new life to old treasures.

"Collecting unwanted bikes for reuse and recycling is a part of Council's circular economy commitment to keep materials in use, reduce waste and encourage repair over disposal," he said.

"All repairable adult bikes will be professionally refurbished and resold with warranties, while children's bikes are professionally repaired and redistributed to children in need through the Revolve Recycling Foundation.

"Each donation helps reduce waste, saves energy and supports an eco-friendly alternative to buying new bikes."

Bikes unsuitable for repair will be dismantled for spare parts and scrap metal recycling.

The event is free to attend but registrations are required for the two bike maintenance workshops with Cheeky Bikes at 11am and 12.30pm.

The workshops will demonstrate how to clean and lubricate your bike chain, check your brakes and keep your tyres inflated.

The Great Bicycle Recycle will run from 10am to 3pm on Sunday 30 November at Speers Point Park.
