Where is money for Launceston General Hospital?

Tasmanian Labor

The Liberal Government's signature health policy and plan for the Launceston General Hospital redevelopment is currently just that – a plan.

Shadow Health Minister Anita Dow said despite a glossy masterplan being released, last week's Budget had revealed that not a single dollar was allocated to the project over the next four years.

"One of the Liberal Party's biggest commitments at the election was the $580 million stage two redevelopment of the LGH," Ms Dow said.

"Yet this project will not receive a single dollar over the next four years.

"Mr Rockliff claimed he would personally drive this project, yet he has failed to secure money from his federal colleagues which it is dependent upon.

"It's also clear that this government has no plan to fund this important project — which would deliver better services to the people of Launceston and surrounds - over the next four years.

"The government needs to be honest about this project with Tasmanians."

Ms Dow said the government must cut the spin and fully commit to its health promises.

"Last week's Health Dashboard data showed over 11,000 Tasmanians remain on the elective surgery waitlist and that just 51 per cent of elective surgery patients were seen within the clinically recommended time.

"Tasmania's health system is at breaking point and promising a $580 million project to Tasmanians in an attempt to address this – and then failing to allocate a cent in last week's budget is appalling."
