Whitehorse is very disappointed that LXRP has decided to compulsorily require the use of two northern sportsfields at Surrey Park from later this year for up to two years, and including the baseball diamond from early 2023.
Alongside the community, Council has advocated strongly for LXRP to find an alternate site for machinery and equipment.
Whitehorse Mayor, Cr Andrew Munroe said Council is urgently considering the impact of the loss of these sportsfields to local sports clubs people who use the area for walking and other recreation activities, and local residents.
"We call on LXRP to reconsider the decision to occupy these sports fields. The community and Council encourage LXRP to explore options with far less impact on community amenity. It is disappointing that LXRP has not found a better option," Cr Munroe said.
"LXRP need to address our sporting clubs and local residents to fully explain their decision to occupy this valuable open space. Council will strongly advocate for alternative arrangements for the impacted clubs to ensure they are not disadvantaged by this decision."
"We appreciate the safety and amenity benefits that will arise from removing dangerous level crossings, but we believe this could be achieved with less disruption to local resident and sporting clubs which are just beginning their recovery from the pandemic."
