Wilful damage charges at Ingham, QLD

A man has been charged after allegedly causing the derailment of a cane train at Ingham this morning, Queensland Police say.

It is alleged around 7.30am a man has broken into a Queensland Rail facility and undertook actions that resulted in a cane train carrying 96 empty cane bins to derail near the intersection of Cartwright and Lynn Streets.

No one was injured as a result of the incident however the derailment has caused significant damage to the cane train track infrastructure and equipment.

The cane train track system crosses the main Queensland Rail track system at this intersection. Queensland Rail’s line has been undamaged and the main line rail traffic has been unaffected.

A 19-year-old Cardwell man was arrested at the scene and charged with one count each of wilful damage part of a railway, enter premises to commit indictable offence and endangering the safe use of transport infrastructure.

He is expected to appear at the Ingham Magistrates Court on November 17.
