Will White and Labor Support Greens on Drug Legalisation?

Members,

The Rockliff Liberal Government could not be clearer - we will not be softening our laws against illegal drugs.

Minister Ellis said that illicit drugs are illegal for a reason – they destroy lives, families and communities, while lining the pockets of criminals.

"We are committed to disrupting the supply of illicit drugs into and around Tasmania and investing in our police force to crack down on criminal activity," Minister Ellis said.

"Our strong investment in police has resulted in 334 additional police officers being recruited, and this investment is delivering real results to the benefit of the community, such as the crack down on members of outlaw motorcycle gangs earlier this week.

"The question is, where does Rebecca White stand on this issue given Labor's party platform supports the decriminalisation of illicit drugs?

"We've already seen former Tasmanian Labor president Ben McGregor try to pressure Labor on their position on drugs, which comes after former Leader David O'Byrne launched his ambitious bid to return to the leadership – further highlighting the deep splits that exist within their ranks.

"Will Labor vote with the Greens to decriminalise possession of hard drugs like heroin and ice - and importantly, who will make the call?"

Minister Ellis said that only a Rockliff Liberal Government will keep Tasmanians and Tasmanian communities safe from the scourge of organised crime and illicit drugs.
