Witness appeal after car hit by train in Bairnsdale

Police are appealing for witnesses following a collision between a train and car in Bairnsdale tonight, Victoria Police say.

It is believed the incident occurred at a Ligar Street crossing about 6.30pm.

The two occupants in the car were trapped for some time before being cut free by emergency services.

The 19-year-old female driver, from Bairnsdale, has been airlifted to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The 17-year-old male passenger, from Bairnsdale, has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.

None of the 38 passengers on board the V/Line Traralgon-bound train have reported any injuries.

The train line will remain closed until tomorrow morning while police investigate the cause of the collision.
