Wollongong City Council will soon be inviting community feedback on our city's roadmap for economic prosperity over the next decade.
On Monday night, Council endorsed the public exhibition of the draft Economic Development Strategy 2025–2035. The strategy outlines a vision for Wollongong's economy as a diverse, resilient economy that fosters innovation and growth, attracts investment and supports a thriving business community.
This new strategy continues the momentum and transformation Wollongong has experienced over past decades, ensuring our local economy has a diverse, resilient and strong industry base. It capitalises on the strong progress made under the previous 2019 strategy, including the early achievement of the ambitious 10,500 jobs target four years ahead of schedule.
The draft strategy includes a new jobs target of 20,500 net additional jobs by 2035. It also outlines five key priority areas for Wollongong, including a city that is open for business, supports new growth and investment; is business friendly; vibrant and connected; fosters innovation and inclusion and is environmentally sustainable.
It positions Wollongong as a competitive destination for emerging industries including clean energy, advanced manufacturing, technology, creative industries and professional services.
Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said the strategy reflects the city's ambition to grow as a smart, sustainable and globally connected city.
"We're committed to shaping Wollongong's future economy in a way that benefits our community, our businesses and our environment," Cr Brown said.
"We're pleased with the progress and success of our previous strategy. We can see the positive impacts it has made across our city – both in the short and long term.
"The draft Strategy outlines a clear direction for how we can support job creation, attract new industries, and ensure Wollongong continues to thrive. I look forward to our community and businesses sharing their thoughts with us on this important guiding plan for our city."
Wollongong City Council General Manager Greg Doyle welcomed the adoption of the strategy as a key opportunity to build on Council's ongoing work in fostering strong relationships and advocating for sustainable growth across the city.
"A document like this sets a clear agenda and direction for Council to advocate for and facilitate business growth and investment," Mr Doyle said. "It signals that Wollongong is future-focused and ready to support industries that are shaping the world."
"We're already seeing this in action through companies like Green Gravity, Hysata and Sicona, three standout examples of Wollongong leading the way in developing and delivering cutting-edge technologies with global impact."
The draft strategy draws on extensive research and consultation with local stakeholders, including hearing from our local business community and industry representatives across Wollongong, helping ensure the strategy aligns with shared goals and priorities for the region's economic future.
The strategy will be on public exhibition from Monday 22 September until Thursday 6 November. Council is encouraging residents, businesses and industry groups to take a look at the draft strategy and share their feedback on Our Wollongong website .
