Woman assaulted on train in Fairfield

An investigation is underway after a man assaulted a woman on a train in Sydney’s south-west, NSW Police say.

Police have been told a man walked past a woman in the carriage of the train, which was running between Canley Vale and Fairfield, about 9.30pm yesterday (Thursday 14 December 2017), before a brief argument took place.

A short time later, the man returned to the carriage and sat next to an 18-year-old woman, before punching her in the face and hitting her with a tripod.

A number of witnesses went to the aid of the woman, and attempted to restrain the man until the next stop.

The man managed to break free and fled the scene.

The woman received only minor injuries and attended Fairfield Police Station along with other witnesses to report the incident.

Officers attached to Fairfield Local Area Command would like to speak to a man who might be able to assist with their inquiries.

He is described to police as being of Asian appearance, about 30-40 years old, 165cm tall and off medium build. He was last seen wearing a black t-shirt, black pants, black shoes and was carrying a grey and blue backpack and was last seen walking toward Smart Street Fairfield.

Inquiries are continuing and anyone who may have witnessed the assault and who has not yet spoken to police is urged to come forward.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
