Police and family have praised the quick-thinking actions of the public after an elderly woman reversed into a creek in the state’s north this morning, NSW Police say.
At 9am on Tuesday 13 June 2017, a 73-year-old woman was reversing her car, a late model white Toyota Prado, on a property on Warwick Park Road, Wooyung, 35km north of Byron Bay.
The car slid into the creek after recent heavy rains caused the creek edge and road to become slippery.
The woman was trapped in the partially submerged car with her head just above water level, allowing her to breath.
Her husband, family friend and two nearby residents came to her aid and contacted emergency services.
She was rescued from the car by a NSW Volunteer Rescue Association raft and taken to Tweed Heads Hospital via road ambulance.
She is believed to have suffered a fractured leg, shock and hypothermia.
The family and officers from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command have thanked the men and emergency servicers who came to her rescue.
Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
