Women's Health Atlas shows where action is needed on gender equity

Melbourne - 29 October 2018

There is perhaps no more powerful tool in the movement for gender equality than data.

Without gender-sensitive data, we struggle to understand how gender inequality, discrimination and unequal access affect different Victorians at different stages of their lives.

That's why Minister for Women Natalie Hutchins has today committed $100,000 to Women's Health Victoria to support the expansion of the successful Victorian Women's Health Atlas.

The Women's Health Atlas provides data on key health issues affecting women across the state, including sexual and reproductive health, mental health, violence against women, preventable diseases, cancer and gender equality. It is the first tool of its kind to use sex-disaggregated data to highlight the disparity of health outcomes between females and males for every Local Government Area in Victoria.

Users can access information like average weekly income, physical activity levels, or rates of family violence. This information can then be adapted to help policy-makers, planners and health professionals deliver initiatives that reflect the individual needs of their local areas.

As noted by the Minister for Women, the Hon. Natalie Hutchins MP

"Women's health affects everyone. That's why the Victorian Women's Health Atlas is a vital tool to identify resources and gendered demographics across Victoria."

As noted by Rita Butera, CEO, Women's Health Victoria

"The Atlas enables users to understand 'at a glance' how their area is faring on priority health issues and gender equality indicators."
