Development of new tourism infrastructure for Christmas Island is now under way, as part of the $4.2 million funding package secured by Assistant Minister Marino in late 2019 to support a range of projects promoting long-term economic diversification on the Island.
The Morrison Government has started work on this important project that forms part of that package - a $1.8 million investment for vital new ecotourism infrastructure in the world-renowned Christmas Island National Park.
Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said Christmas Island is a remarkable ecotourism destination, with tropical rainforests, spectacular sea cliffs and diverse wildlife.
"Sitting 1500 km from the Australian mainland, Christmas Island has a remarkable ecology. It's home to more than 200 endemic species including rare birds and crabs and attracts visitors from all over the world," Ms Ley said.
"Parks Australia will deliver the new infrastructure, with a focus on sustainable nature-based tourism.
"Projects include developing a camp site and day-use area, a conservation and information centre, walking and mountain bike trails, as well as interpretive materials for the Christmas Island National Park."
The funding will expand the current visitor offerings to attract a wider range of tourists to the island and promote the environmental significance of the Park.
Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Territories Nola Marino said the upgrades will contribute to the economic and environmental sustainability of the island and help to address the significant impact of COVID-19 on the island's economy.
"Improving park amenities will support tourism to the island as restrictions ease, providing a boost to the local economy and businesses. The delivery of these projects will also help support the Christmas Island economy and employment during the construction phase," Assistant Minister Marino said.
"The Government is committed to delivering sustainable initiatives which diversify the economy of Christmas Island, including showcasing and conserving the incredible natural wonders of the island," she said.
This investment is in addition to the Australian Government's $233 million investment in Parks Australia to support new and upgraded infrastructure projects across six national parks and the Australian National Botanic Gardens. At Christmas Island National Park, this investment of up to $19.7 million will support the upgrade of the Margaret Knoll Lookout, a popular site for bird watching.
