The ACT Government is delivering the infrastructure our growing city needs with construction kicking off on improvements along the Tuggeranong foreshore.
"This is part of our biggest ever program to improve suburban infrastructure across our city, with upgrades being carried out to local shops, playgrounds and other community facilities, as well as new dog parks," said Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel.
"Upgrades to the foreshore between Reed Street South and Tuggeranong Town Park follow completed upgrades in recent years to Anketell Street, the laneways and pedestrian and cyclist improvements.
"We heard over 657 ideas from the local community during consultation last year on these upgrades which will improve connections in and around the town centre, improve public access and safety and encourage the community to spend more time in public spaces with family and friends.
"These upgrades will provide the Town Centre with an improved playground, path infrastructure, new and upgraded public toilets and more seating around the lake. We want to renew the popular foreshore to make it a better outdoor space the community can enjoy."
Key features being delivered
1. Improving the Tuggeranong Town Park playground with new equipment to provide more accessible play and picnic spots. Features include nature play and a climber rope.
2. Upgrading the existing Tuggeranong Town Park toilet with new, accessible features.
3. Improving the accessibility and safety of the foreshore path network, including widening the path, removing obstacles, providing new street furniture to sit and rest and upgrading lighting in key locations.
4. Revitalisation of the existing boardwalk including replacement of the existing decking material and additional decking constructed to improve safety and accessibility.
5. At the Tuggeranong skate park, works to address safety issues and rideability, such as minor resurfacing and replacement of damaged ramp surfaces will be undertaken.
"There will be seven discrete work zones along the foreshore. This allows as much area as possible to remain open and accessible to the public whilst construction is underway," said Minister Steel.
"Construction will get underway in coming weeks. A staging program is available online showing the anticipated start dates of each work zone with completion expected around the middle of 2024."
Minister Steel highlighted the number of suburban infrastructure upgrades heading into construction phases between now and the end of the year.
"Over the last few years we've been asking Canberrans to provide their feedback on designs and plans for this significant program and it's really exciting to be at the construction stage," he said.
"Work is also starting on the northside to deliver a new community recreation park in Casey. Following community feedback it will include a multi-purpose court, cricket net, irrigated grass areas, BBQs and accessible toilet facilities.
"Construction is well underway on upgrades to Brierly Street in Weston, as well as at the Charnwood Group Centre. We're also moving through the construction procurement phases for upgrades to Hardwick Crescent at the Kippax Group Centre and the new dog parks in Franklin and Lanyon, with construction expected to commence on both before the end of the year.
"I look forward to seeing the completion of all the suburban infrastructure upgrades and the changes they bring for the lives of families, children and all Canberrans. We know how important our public spaces are and these upgrades will encourage more use of them than ever before."
