Work underway after weekend of wild weather

Council crews are out inspecting roads, landslips, sewers and blocked drains after the Byron Shire recorded around 200mm of rain over the last week (since Tuesday 18 October), and following wild weather conditions over the weekend.

"Firstly, we hope everyone is okay after the weekend of heavy rain and flood warnings from the SES and Bureau of Meteorology," Council's Director Infrastructure Services, Phil Holloway said.

"It is traumatising for all of us every time we see an East Coast low on the horizon and heavy rainfall predictions for the Northern Rivers. It's very nerve racking and I expect many people will be feeling a bit exhausted today.

"The SES staff and volunteers worked tirelessly as the lead authority over the weekend and we thank them for their efforts – which will continue throughout this La Nina period.

"We were lucky to escape riverine flooding this time with our gauges on the Brunswick River peaking under the minor flood level this morning – much to everyone's relief.

"There are, however, some roads and causeways still flooded and some are not passable. We ask everyone to keep an eye on livetraffic.com for updated information.

"Our routine drainage maintenance program has been put on hold today while we attend to high priority maintenance and repairs across the Shire.

"Our crews have been monitoring the flash flooding that happened in Byron Bay when some drains were overwhelmed by the volume of rain.

"We'll also be inspecting damage across our hinterland areas including Upper Wilsons Creek and Huonbrook today," Mr Holloway said.
