Work is commencing on the Magellan Street Pump Station upgrade in Lismore, a project that will strengthen the city's response to future flood events.
The project will replace the existing tractor-driven pump with two modern submersible electric pumps, significantly improving capacity, reliability, and safety.
Federal Nationals Member for Page, Kevin Hogan, said the project was part of funding secured intended to lower the level of future floods.
"This funding was secured by the former Coalition Government in March 2022, just one month after the devastating flood," Mr Hogan said.
"At the same time, we also funded the CSIRO flood mitigation study to ensure we had the long-term plan needed."
Mr Hogan said while this project improves flood response, the next phase must focus on lowering flood levels.
"The CSIRO report is due in June, and that will be the starting point for the real flood mitigation works needed to reduce the height of future floods.
"Pumps and levees are important, but we also need solutions that actually lower the flood level across Lismore.
"I have been calling for stronger flood mitigation and long-term solutions since the 2022 disaster, and I will keep fighting to make sure our community is better protected."
The project is funded by the Australian Government through the Northern Rivers Recovery and Resilience Program 2022-23.
