Hornsby Shire Council will soon begin a trial to reclaim Hunter Lane, turning it into a shared space where pedestrians clearly have right of way.
"This is a major thoroughfare for pedestrians who are accessing Hornsby Library, Hornsby Mall or Hornsby Station," Hornsby Shire Mayor Philip Ruddock says.
"We want to make it a far more welcoming and safe place for those people, by ensuring everybody knows the pedestrians have priority."
The work is being funded by a grant from the NSW Government, through the Streets as Shared Spaces Program.
"The Streets as Shared Spaces program is part of the NSW Government's efforts to encourage new and improved pedestrian and active transport links that facilitate social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic," Hornsby MP Matt Kean said.
"Not only will these projects improve how we use our public spaces, they make our streets more attractive and welcoming for people."
"It's another of Council's many initiatives to make our public spaces more inviting and accommodating for people."
The works will include:
- Extension of the Hunter Lane shared zone to the north to improve pedestrian connections between the Burdett Street car park and the library
- Improved lighting over this extended shared zone area.
- Painting of a "colourful laneway design" to highlight that the Hunter Lane shared zone is a pedestrian priority area.
The new arrangements will begin as a 12-month trial, while community consultation is conducted to gauge the success of the program, then it will be decided whether to make the changes permanent.
Work is scheduled to begin in late April 2021.
