Australian Workers Union

The union representing Tasmanian salmon industry workers rejects the election stunt arranged by fiction author Richard Flanagan and the Greens.

AWU Tasmania spokesperson said Tasmanians should ignore the attack on our salmon industry jobs.

AWU members in the salmon Industry play a pro active role in protecting the wild fisheries by substituting wild fisheries with farmed product.

"I'm sorry Richard Flanagan felt upset when his beach house views were disturbed by workers doing something useful and productive for the Tasmanian economy, their families and regional communities" The AWU spokesperson said.

"Tasmania is internationally-recognised as having some of the highest salmon standards in the world.

"Salmon is now Tasmania's most important farming industry. Annual sales are approaching $665 million. The industry has created well over two thousand jobs and a further seven thousand indirect jobs. It contributes $626 million to the Tasmanian economy.

"Tasmania is well-placed to capitalise on the growing demand for high-quality, sustainable sources of protein among the growing Asian middle class. The export opportunities are enormous. But the jobs and opportunities can be easily undermined by people with political agendas dressed up as environmentalist.

"Tasmanians should dismiss this attack on their jobs, reginal communities and economy.
