Workers worse off as wages fail to keep up with cost of living under Gutwein

Tasmanian Labor

Life continues to get harder for Tasmanians under the Gutwein Liberal Government as wages continue to fall well behind the spiralling cost of living.

Shadow Treasurer Shane Broad said workers were again worse off under the Liberals with ABS data released today showing the annual wage rise in Tasmania of three per cent fell well short of CPI at 4.5 per cent.

"And while private sector wages grew by 3.2 per cent, the public sector grew by just 2.6 per cent - that alone shows how completely out of touch Peter Gutwein is with Tasmanians and the daily struggle they face," Dr Broad said.

"Tasmanians are effectively having their incomes cut by 1.5 per cent at the same time cost of living puts the fundamentals - like petrol, like rent, like groceries - more and more out of reach.

"Tasmanians deserve better than a government that is oblivious to the fact that life is getting harder and harder for families.

"The fact is Mr Gutwein is too distracted dealing with the chaos and disarray in his Cabinet to focus on the things that matter to Tasmanians - earning a fair wage, paying bills and putting food on the table."
