Works to repair a landslip in Walhalla following a storm event in 2022 are now complete with the road fully reopened to the public.
During the storm event in August 2022, Baw Baw Shire experienced significant impacts. Tens of thousands of residents were left without power and widespread building damage occurred. This severe weather event resulted in substantial damage across 31 different towns, and cleanup and recovery efforts were ongoing for years following the event.
As a result of that event, a landslip occurred on Church Hill Road, Walhalla. While Council investigated long-term remediation solutions, temporary water barriers were installed to redirect traffic away from the affected area and ensure public safety.
Baw Baw Shire Council secured funding from Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) to remediate the site, and these works were undertaken from 5 November 2025 – 18 December 2025.
The DRFA is a cost sharing arrangement between the Commonwealth and State governments to support relief and recovery activities following an eligible disaster.
The works comprised the realignment of approximately 100 metres of Church Hill Road into the hillside away from the slip, along with asphalt surfacing, installation of a dished invert drain, and installation of road safety barriers.
Baw Baw Shire Mayor Councillor Kate Wilson is pleased the works have been completed in the lead to the summer holiday period.
"The Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) is an essential funding stream for Council's to be able to support relief and recovery activities following eligible disasters, and we thank the Government's for this continued support," Cr Wilson said.
"I am thrilled this road has now been repaired and these works will ensure tourists and members of our local community can continue travelling safely on our roads."
