The Allan Labor Government is ensuring trams continue running safely and reliably for millions of passengers travelling on Victoria and Elizabeth Street routes each year, with major maintenance to begin next week.
From Monday, 6 to Sunday 26, October, crews will undertake vital works near the intersection of Melbourne's Victoria and Elizabeth Streets, replacing tram tracks and expanding the tram platforms outside Queen Victoria Market - with some service changes to Routes 19, 57 and 59 during this time.
The construction of a new east-west tram track connection will help move trams between lines and depots to improve flexibility on the network by connecting the Swanston Street corridor to the north-west via Victoria Street.
There will be a new level-access tram stop built on Victoria Street between O'Connell and Cobden Street, improving accessibility and allowing passengers to get to the Queen Victoria Market more easily.
There will also be changes to parking between Peel and Elizabeth streets to allow for the new tram stop and keep traffic moving.
Additionally, Victoria Street will be closed from Bouverie Street to Peel Street, and Elizabeth Street will be closed from Therry Street to Queensberry Street.
Over the coming months further work will be done to improve traffic flow in the area, with the introduction of hook turns further west on Victoria Street at Howard, Chetwynd and Leveson streets.
Crews will work 24 hours to complete the upgrades, with a full road closure of the Elizabeth Street and Victoria Street intersection during this time, with detours for bike riders, pedestrians and traffic, and service changes to tram routes along Elizabeth and Victoria streets.
Yarra Trams will keep local businesses and residents informed and work with them to provide access and maintain deliveries during construction.

As stated by Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams
"This crucial work will not only keep our trams, and the thousands of Victorians who rely on them moving, but also deliver important safety and accessibility upgrades for passengers, bike riders and pedestrians."
"The Queen Victoria Market is a Melbourne icon and these upgrades will make it easier than ever to jump on a tram to enjoy all it has to offer."
"Thank you in advance to the passengers, businesses and the local community for their patience while we deliver these vital long-term improvements."
