World-class ocean technology sector strengthens Atlantic Canada's economy

Backgrounder

DeNova Inc., a start-up company operating out of the National Research Council Canada (NRC) in Halifax, has developed an new source of protein made from microorganisms fed by harmful unused carbon deposits that will help support the ongoing development of sustainable aquaculture practices.

To help the company with research and development for its innovative aquaculture protein, the Government of Canada is providing DeNova Inc. with a $500,000 repayable contribution from ACOA's Regional Growth Through Innovation Program (REGI) and up to $307,660 from the National Research Council Canada's Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP). Through this project, the company will undertake research and development and scale-up activities, including production pilot and performance feed trials. This project will create two full-time positions.

The Nova Scotia Innovation Hub is also contributing $100,000 towards the project.

The Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship (COVE) - Dartmouth, N.S.

The Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship (COVE), which is operated by the Institute for Ocean Research Entreprise (IORE), is a hub of ocean talent, technologies and resources for budding and mature ocean entrepreneurs.

The Centre will now undertake a number of development activities targeting ocean sector professionals designed to address the skilled labour gap in the Atlantic region's ocean sector. To support COVE with this project, the Government of Canada, through ACOA's REGI program, is providing a two-year non-repayable contribution of $356,842 to undertake various activities designed to address the skilled labour gap in the ocean sector.

The Province of Nova Scotia, through the Department of Labour and Advanced Education, is supporting a related internship program with a $63,000 contribution.

Sedna Technologies Inc. - Dartmouth, N.S.

Sedna Technologies Inc. has a suite of tools to help the commercial fishing and aquaculture industries streamline quality control of products from sea to plate.

The company will now design and develop a proprietary micro water quality sensor to better monitor and manage commercial seafood and aquaculture chains with a $111,000 repayable investment from ACOA through the REGI program. The project will create two full-time positions while helping the company prepare for future growth.
