World Water Day Spotlights Water Grid Security Progress

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Each year, World Water Day highlights the importance of secure and reliable water for our:

  • communities
  • industry
  • environment.

As the driest inhabited continent, water security remains critical to Australia's future.

The Australian Government is supporting long-term water security through the $3.4 billion National Water Grid Fund (NWGF).

National Water Grid (NWG) projects are developed in partnership with state and territory governments to deliver the right solutions in the right places.

Progress over the past year

In the past year alone, new projects have been funded and many more advanced nationwide.

Key milestones include:

  • 41 new projects funded, valued at $167.9 million
  • 21 projects completed more than 100 projects continuing to progress nationwide.

Looking ahead

In 2026, many NWG projects are expected to reach important milestones.

This includes:

  • up to 30 water infrastructure projects to complete construction
  • delivery of about 30 business case and science projects to guide future water infrastructure choices.

Many of these projects will help improve water security for regional, remote and First Nations communities.

Together they lay the groundwork for a stronger Australia, a more resilient economy and a more sustainable future.
