WOW: Council turns orange in support of SES volunteers

Council is turning orange this month in a show of support for the dedicated volunteers of the NSW State Emergency Services (SES).

The SES is encouraging communities across Australia to wear orange in celebration of Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW Day) on 19 May to recognise all its volunteers and the vital work they do.

Buildings around the country are also lighting up orange in support of the campaign, including Council's headquarters at Katoomba. Three sides of Council's headquarters will be lit up in SES orange so that it's visible to passing traffic, from around dusk until 11pm on 19 May.

"The wonderful SES members are a lifeline for our community," Mayor Cr Mark Greenhill said. "I'd like to thank all the local and state-wide volunteers by supporting the Wear Orange Wednesday campaign.

"Lighting up Council's headquarters is a significant gesture to recognise their service to our Blue Mountains community during the many flood and storm emergencies of recent years.

"On behalf of our community, I'd like to thanks all these dedicated people who give so generously of their time for those in need.

"I encourage residents to show their support too and acknowledge these efforts. It's easy to get involved by dressing in your favourite orange outfit for the day!"

Council HQ isn't the only building turning orange for the day - many Australian icons are involved this year, including the Harbour Bridge, Sydney Town Hall, the Opera House and the Big Banana!

Wear Orange Wednesday occurs during National Volunteer Week (NVW), the annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of the nation's almost six million volunteers, from Monday 17 to Sunday 23 May, 2021.
