WSU hosting Veteran's Day events ahead of university holiday

Events honoring current and former U.S. military members are taking place across the Washington State University system ahead of Veterans Day.

Here's a look at what's planned for each of WSU's physical campuses.

WSU Health Sciences Spokane

The Spokane campus is hosting several events beginning Nov. 4 at its Student Academic Center as part of Veteran's Week, including a veteran game day from noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 7 and a breakfast the following morning from 9 a.m. to noon.

WSU Vancouver

WSU Vancouver is hosting a Veterans Day Celebration on Nov. 7 beginning at noon inside the Firstenburg Student Commons. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is being provided. Three students will give speeches on the theme of resilience, capped off by a keynote address by WSU Regent Scott Clark.

WSU Tri-Cities

The WSU Tri Cities Patriots Club is bringing a local hot dog purveyor to the Consolidated Information Center patio from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. November 7. A portion of sales will go to WSU Tri Cities' Veterans Center, which is working with the Patriots Club to line campus pathways with American flags in honor of service members.

WSU Pullman

WSU Pullman will host a breakfast and veterans memorial ceremony November 8, organized by the the ASWSU Student Veterans Committee. The event open to all members of the community.

Breakfast is being served from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. inside the Compton Union Building Junior Ballroom. At 10:45 a.m., attendees will meet outside the CUB to walk alongside members of campus ROTC groups of to the Veterans Memorial Ceremony, slated to begin at 11 a.m. at the WSU Veteran's Memorial.

The event's speakers include Jess Downs – a retired United States Marine Corps service member and current Pullman Rotary treasurer, Jill Creighton, dean of students and associate vice president of Student Affairs and WSU Regent Carson. The former Boeing executive served with the 609th Special Operations Squadron based out of Thailand's Nakhon Phenom Provence during the Vietnam War.

A desire to share his experiences transitioning from service to higher education prompted Carson to volunteer to speak at the upcoming events.

"Any sacrifice made by student veterans today will result in life changing events for them in the future," Carson said.

The events take place ahead of Veterans Day, happening this year on November 11, which is a university holiday.
