Following cases of vandalism and discrimination, the University of Würzburg has made it clear that it stands for cooperation at eye level and the appreciation of different perspectives.

In recent weeks, graffiti with anti-Semitic, racist and anti-queer content has been discovered on the campus of Julius-Maximilians-Universität (JMU). There was also a case of vandalism in which a Pride flag was stolen. It is still unclear whether the incidents were caused by JMU members or external persons. The university management is now making it clear that anyone who behaves in this way is acting against the entire university community.
"There is no place for exclusionary or misanthropic behaviour at the University of Würzburg," emphasises University President Paul Pauli. "Our mission is to drive social progress through scientific knowledge - and we can only achieve this by working together, never against each other. Excellent research and teaching are created where different perspectives and experiences come together, where we listen to and learn from each other."
As a university, JMU offers a platform for an open, critical and even controversial exchange of arguments. However, this must always take place at eye level - and never with the aim of belittling others or questioning their membership of the community, Pauli continued. The Diversity Coordination Centre provides advice on all issues relating to equal opportunities and diversity at the university.
Space for Free Development
"All members of the university should be able to live, learn and work freely - regardless of origin, religion, gender identity or sexual orientation," emphasises Professor Anja Schlömerkemper, Vice President for Equal Opportunities, Career Planning and Sustainability. "JMU sees itself as a place where the free development of personality is possible. This freedom forms the basis of a vibrant and successful academic culture."
