In response to today's passage of the Build Back Better Act in the US House of Representatives, which includes important funding for climate programs -- including climate-smart agriculture, waste reduction infrastructure, transportation and renewable energy - and repealing the Arctic Drilling Program, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from Alejandro Pérez, senior vice president of policy and government affairs:
"It is encouraging to see Congress seize the opportunity to advance real and effective solutions to climate change and nature loss. These deeply connected crises are already having devastating impacts at home and abroad, and the much-needed investments in this bill could not come at a more important time.
"The Build Back Better Act will boost efforts to meet the US commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 50-52% by 2030, but given the loss of key provisions during the negotiating process, more work remains for both Congress and the administration if the US is to reach that target.
"Nevertheless, this bill represents a massive and unprecedented investment in solving the climate crisis and building America's clean energy future. The impact will be transformative, and will lay the groundwork for further, necessary action.
"Now, we urge the Senate to act with all deliberate speed and show that the US is ready to back up its promises with action and results."
