Today, the White House released the initial details of President Biden's FY2022 budget plan which prioritizes funding to meet the historic challenges of the moment including programs to tackle climate change across all federal agencies. In particular, the budget requests $14 billion for these efforts, including historic levels to tackle environmental justice ($1.4 billion), funds to begin to meet our global obligations ($1.2 billion to the Green Climate Fund) and $691 million for USAID and the Department of State to assist developing countries meet climate change challenges. The budget also includes robust funding for critical global health programs.
In response, WWF issued the following statement from Alejandro Pérez, senior vice president, policy and government affairs:
"As a statement of its priorities, this budget clearly shows the Administration is committed to tackling the climate crisis. By requesting significant investments in domestic programs in an equitable manner, without forgetting our international responsibilities, the Biden budget shows a path to confront the loss of nature and climate change, while increasing resources for addressing the economic crisis and the global pandemic.
"The proposed budget puts us on a path to restore our nation's decades-long commitment to international conservation and sustainable development.
"We urge Congress to follow through on the administration's request and help protect our prosperity, our people and our planet."
