Rockhampton Regional Council is delighted to announce the reopening of the much‑loved Wyatt's Wonder Web play structure at Kershaw Gardens, with repairs completed just in time for the summer school holidays.

The play structure was closed following significant fire damage caused by vandals.

Repairs involved a like‑for‑like replacement of the original features, including new shade sails, the five levels of netting on the structure, fresh softfall underneath, as well as installing new play tunnels, climbing pads, seats, cross net, ropes and fixings.

Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the reopening marks the culmination of many months of dedicated work by Council staff.

"To see the web reopened for children to enjoy, especially in time for the school holidays, is a wonderful result," Cr Rutherford said.

"It is so sad that a senseless act of vandalism denied countless children an opportunity to enjoy this fabulous play experience for a prolonged period.

"We sincerely thank our community for your patience as our staff assessed the structure, lodged and awaited the outcome of an insurance claim, ordered specialised parts, and completed the repairs once they arrived."

Cr Rutherford said Wyatt's Wonder Web has always been a standout feature of Kershaw Gardens.

"When we chose this unique sphere structure in 2018, our goal was to make Kershaw Gardens a destination for families, a must‑see stop for travellers, and a lasting legacy for future generations," she said.

"It's wonderful that this legacy can now be enjoyed once again."

Cr Rutherford emphasised that responsibility for the closure rests solely with the vandals, while Council staff worked diligently to restore the world‑class structure.

"Council has implemented additional measures, such as upgraded CCTV cameras with improved vision and clarity, to help prevent this from happening again, but we also ask for the community's support," she said.

"Please remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police so we can keep Wyatt's Wonder Web open and safe for everyone."
