Yarra City Council
Yarra has restored the community's access to Darebin Creek, after removing a gate installed by Alphington Grammar across Old Heidelberg Road in 2019.
The gate has since blocked public access to Darebin Creek and the revitalised $18m Darebin Trail. Following overwhelming community support - more than 95% of consultation respondents backed its removal – the City of Yarra dismantled the gate, installed a raised pedestrian crossing, and enhanced the area with landscaping.
This initiative forms part of Yarra's investment in community infrastructure, with the Capital Works program set to grow from $35.3 million in 2025/26 to $49 million by 2028/29 to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding population.
