The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting an ecological hazard reduction burn in Yathong Nature Reserve with a planned starting date of Friday 3 April 2026, weather permitting.
The burn will take place within small, isolated pockets of Spinifex grass areas along the western side of the Yathong Nature Reserve, south of the Western Fire Trail and north of the Glenlea Fire Trail.
This ecological burn will assist in restoring important Spinifex grass habitat areas to promote the survival of the critically endangered Mukarrthippi Grasswren.
NPWS will be assisted by Rural Fire Service crews and this burn is just one of many being undertaken by NPWS across NSW, as conditions allow. For their safety, the public should not enter closed areas while the operation is underway.
Roads and trails are closed in the area.
This ecological burn is planned to use the aerial drip torch from a helicopter to deliver a very focused and specific low to moderate intensity burns that also aim to improve the park's biodiversity.
If you are vulnerable to smoke, try to stay indoors, keeping doors and windows closed to reduce your exposure.
