Yo Bendigo calls for entries for first Yo Poets Showcase

If you're a young poet and you know it, we want you to register for the very first YO Poets Showcase set to take place from 5.30pm to 7pm Thursday June 24 at the Bendigo Library's amphitheatre space 259 Hargreaves Street Bendigo.

The YO Poets Showcase is hosted by the Yo Media Team and is open to young people aged between 12 and 25 years, to perform spoken word poetry and short creative writing pieces in an intimate and supportive environment.

Performance entry is free. All genres and styles of performance are welcome with each act having approximately seven minutes on stage.

Local writer, performer, major motivator and influence for the performance, Emma Burgess-Gilchrist said the Showcase is an opportunity for young creative writers to present their work.

"Young people have a voice, now and in the future and this showcase is an exciting opportunity for them to feel heard by their community" Ms Burgess-Gilchrist said.

"It provides the opportunity for young people to develop their skills as writers and performers and secure a place in the local spoken work scene. To stand before your community as a creative communicator and share your poetry is not only incredibly empowering, it's fun!"

The theme of this year's event is 'A Winter Night' and entry to the event will be via gold coin donation with all proceeds to be donated to the Bendigo Winter Night Shelter, a program for people experiencing homelessness during the colder months.

Register by Friday June 18 on the Yo Bendigo website www.yobendigo.com.au/yopoets as places are limited to a maximum of eight acts.
