The Geographical Names Board is seeking community feedback on a proposal from Shellharbour City Council to name three beaches in its Local Government Area (LGA).

Chair of the Geographical Names Board Narelle Underwood said feedback was being sought on the proposal to name the beaches as Shellharbour North Beach, Shellharbour South Beach and Gadhu Beach.

"It is important place names are unique and easily understood by the community," Mrs Underwood said.

"We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed names."

The proposed Shellharbour North Beach is located north of Shellharbour township between Cowrie Island and Barrack Point. It has historically been known as Shellharbour Beach and Shellharbour Surf Beach with various sections known as Barrack Point Beach, Blacks Beach and Nuns Beach.

The beach south of Shellharbour township between Shellharbour Beachside Holiday Park and the break-wall is known locally as Shellharbour South Beach with the proposal to make this its official name.

As a result of the harbour's construction at Shell Cove, the southern section of Shellharbour South Beach has become isolated. A new name for this beach will resolve any potential confusion and support navigation.

The proposed name Gadhu Beach is of Aboriginal origin in the local Dharawal language and means 'salt water'.

GNB is seeking feedback to gauge community sentiment for the proposed names. Suggestions for alternative names is not being sought at this time.

Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board's website.

Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.

The closing date for submissions is 4 December 2022.
