Speeding and inattention near roadworks aren't just bad habits, they're life-threatening behaviours that put Orange City Council's road crews, their families, and our whole community at risk.
As part of a national road safety push, the Traffic Management Association of Australia (TMAA) is urging all motorists to slow down near roadworks and emergency services under the campaign: Your Speed Is Our Safety.
It's a message that Orange City Council's road crew knows all too well, with crews out daily maintaining roads and footpaths across the region.
Orange City Council labourer (who can we use here Wayne?), who's been with Council for X years, has seen firsthand how dangerous it can be when drivers ignore signage.
"It only takes a split-second and someone doesn't go home to their family."
Labourer said most motorists do the right thing, but it's often the larger vehicles or those in a hurry who ignore the signs.
"We follow strict safety procedures, but once a car enters our zone, it's out of our hands," he said. "There's no 'undo' button when something goes wrong out here."
He also highlighted the critical role of traffic controllers on site.
"They're not just keeping cars moving, they're looking out for us. We trust them with our lives," he said.
