Youth Hub to beat in town heart

The first sod on a dedicated Youth Hub in the heart of Wallan was officially turned by Member for Yan Yean Danielle Green MP and Mitchell Shire Mayor Councillor David Lowe on Tuesday 17 December.

The former Wellington Street kindergarten building will be transformed into a one-stop shop youth hub. The hub will house high quality youth services for young people aged between 12 and 24 in Mitchell Shire.

The facility will be refurbished to include:

  • open plan kitchen
  • consulting rooms
  • intake rooms
  • GP room
  • youth social spaces
  • modern reception and waiting area
  • accessible and ambulant toilet facilities
  • landscaped passive open space, seating and shade.

The new hub will increase services for young people in Mitchell Shire including mental health support.

Council contributed $1,090,400 to the project with $645,789 from the State Government through the Growing Suburbs Fund.

The initiative has been a key focus for the Mitchell Shire Youth Council who worked alongside Mitchell Shire Council to highlight the need for increased youth services, particularly mental health support. The partnership helped secure government funding for the fit out.

Council is working with The Bridge Youth Services and is hopeful service at the new hub will be operating towards the middle of next year.
