Youth Hubs in NSW Seen as Key to Fighting Loneliness

A new report released today by the Standing Committee on Social Issues, 'The Prevalence, Causes and Impacts of Loneliness in New South Wales', reveals that youth loneliness is at crisis levels and demands immediate, multilayered action.

The Committee has made 20 recommendations to tackle the growing loneliness epidemic, with one standing out as critical: the call for dedicated youth hubs.

Recommendation 10 urges the creation of safe, inclusive spaces where young people can connect, access support, and build a sense of belonging, offering a powerful solution to isolation and a foundation for stronger, healthier communities.

"Belonging is the antidote to loneliness. When young people have free, welcoming spaces they can truly call their own, we build the connection and community that buffers them from life's toughest challenges," said Lauren Stracey, CEO of Youth Action NSW

With national debate intensifying around the potential social media ban for young people, there is growing concern that such restrictions may deepen feelings of isolation and loneliness. For many young people, social media is a primary means of connection and community.

"Young people have told us loud and clear: the solution to loneliness is access to free, welcoming spaces outside of school and home. Places where they can just be together, supported by trusted, professional youth workers," Ms Stracey said.

Youth hubs offer a proactive, place-based response by creating safe, inclusive infrastructures where young people can build relationships, access support and engage in various activities.

Youth hubs don't have to be tied to a building; they can be mobilised and move with community and the needs of young people. This adaptable approach greatly improves access, particularly in regional and rural areas.

With the impending social media ban, many young people are fearful that their sense of isolation may increase. By creating safe and accessible youth hubs, these spaces can bridge the gap between loneliness and belonging.

"We're calling on the NSW Government to act swiftly and decisively; commit to developing and funding youth hubs across the state for the long term. As the Government prepares its response to the Committee's recommendations, young people's needs and voices must be front and centre," Ms Stracey said.

The NSW Government is expected to provide a formal response to all 20 recommendations by early November 2025.
