$100M Boosts Crisis, Transitional Housing Expansion

Australian Treasury

The Albanese Labor Government has reached a major milestone with more than $100 million funded for new crisis, transitional and youth housing projects across Australia through the $1 billion Housing Australia Future Fund - Crisis & Transitional program.

This comes on top of the $243 million already contracted under the Safe Places and Crisis and Transitional Accommodation Program.

Labor's investments in crisis and transitional housing are helping people like Fiona*, who was able to secure safe and stable transitional accommodation in Sydney's north, having escaped a situation of violence.

Delivered in partnership with Housing Australia, this funding will support the delivery of 19 projects, including 7 youth projects and 12 projects for women and children escaping family and domestic violence. These homes are expected to help almost 5,500 Australians experiencing family and domestic violence or homelessness.

These projects** include:

  • A project in Midland, WA - 10 self‑contained townhouses which are equipped with a central multipurpose communal area, intake areas, counselling rooms, and are in close proximity to public transport, local shops, schools, healthcare centre, daycare facility, public open space and leisure facilities.
  • A project in the Illawarra, NSW - 6 two‑bedroom and 9 three‑bedroom dwellings to provide transitional accommodation to women and children experiencing family violence. The site has strong access to essential infrastructure, education facilities, public transport, community services and employment opportunities.
  • A project in Orange, NSW - 17 new self‑contained transitional dwellings for youth at risk of homelessness, within walking distance to employment hubs, TAFE Orange Campus, public transport, retail centres, and recreational amenities. The Project involves the adaptive reuse and conversion of a vacant aged care facility
  • A project in Elizabeth South, SA - 20 supported transitional dwellings for vulnerable youth aged 16-18, with good access to transport, services, TAFE, UniSA and recreation.

These crisis and transitional homes will provide women and their children with the safety, dignity and stability they need to begin rebuilding their lives. Secure housing is the foundation for recovery, providing a place to heal, regain independence and reconnect with community.

Our youth housing projects will ensure young people aren't left behind, providing the stable foundation they need to stay engaged in school, training and work and to move into long‑term housing.

Labor's total $1.2 billion investment in crisis, transitional and youth housing projects represents nearly 20 times what the previous Coalition Government invested. It builds on the Albanese Government's ambitious housing reform agenda, including delivering 55,000 new social and affordable homes.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Housing and Homelessness, Clare O'Neil MP

"In a moment of crisis, this sort of accommodation provides a beacon of safety that helps to deliver dignity and security to women and children escaping unimaginable situations of family and domestic violence.

"Keeping people safe - particularly those most vulnerable - is one of the highest duties of government, and this Labor Government takes that responsibility incredibly seriously.

"These new crisis, transitional and youth housing projects will give more women, children and younger Australians a safe place to turn when they need it most."

Quotes attributable to Assistant Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, Ged Kearney MP

"Every woman and child deserves a safe, secure place to call home. This investment in crisis and transitional housing is about restoring dignity and opening doors to opportunity.

"The women and children who will walk through the doors of this new accommodation are rebuilding their lives after family, domestic or sexual violence. Because violence doesn't just harm the mind and body - it can tear through every part of a person's life: work, education, financial security, and a child's development. Safe housing is one of the most powerful tools we have to help people rebuild a future on their own terms."

Quotes attributable to Fiona*, a tenant in transitional accommodation in Sydney's north funded by the Albanese Labor government

"Supported temporary accommodation has been a lifeline during a challenging time for us. In early recovery, finding safe shelter and trustworthy guidance can feel overwhelming. Our community housing provider and support service offered us both. They gave us space to breathe and regroup, and their referrals opened doors to services that align with our healing journey. Their support has been more than practical - it has been empowering.

"Their assistance with temporary accommodation gave us the stability we needed to begin rebuilding. We felt seen, respected, and guided - not just housed. We're deeply grateful for their compassion and practical help."
