11 projects funded through Weeds Action Fund

Jo Palmer, Minister for Primary Industries and Water

Eleven projects have been granted Government funding to tackle serious weeds that impact valuable agricultural land and the natural environment.

The Rockliff Liberal Government is investing $347,906 in the 11 projects through the latest round of the Weeds Action Fund.

Primary Industries and Water Minister Jo Palmer said grants were available for new projects that demonstrated collaborative partnerships for coordinated containment or eradication activities to address priority weeds.

"This grant round also supported existing projects that broadened their impact or geographical range," Minister Palmer said.

"These projects are tackling a variety of invasive weeds, including removing ricegrass from threatened saltmarsh communities, controlling asparagus fern and a besom heath eradication project.

"With the cash and in-kind contributions from the successful applicants, the total value of investment through this Targeted Small Grants round over the next year is expected to be over $837,000."

Delivery partner, NRM North is delighted by the level of interest in the fund.

Weeds Action Fund Coordinator, John White said that applications were received from around the state and represented a diverse range of candidates.

"Weeds know no borders, which is why a joint approach to weed management between landholders and community groups is so successful," Mr White said.

Minister Palmer congratulated the successful recipients:

  • Circular Head Landcare Group
  • Southern Midlands Council
  • Tamar NRM
  • Sorell and Tasman Council
  • King Island Landcare
  • Derwent Catchment Project
  • Barwick Family Trust
  • Enviro-dynamics
  • Bicheno Landcare
  • Clarence City Council
  • Friends of Bass Strait Islands

In 2018-19 the Tasmanian Government committed $5 million to the Weeds Action Fund, which is facilitated by NRM North with support from NRM South and the Cradle Coast Authority NRM, to co-invest with farmers, councils and community organisations to tackle invasive weeds.

"In the 2023-24 Tasmanian Budget, the Rockliff Liberal Government committed an additional $1.4 million over to years to support the continuation of the Weed Action Fund," Minister Palmer said.
