Dr Amandeep Hansra has been awarded the AMA’s 2026 President’s Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the medical profession through leadership in digital health, medical innovation, doctors’ wellbeing and the care of vulnerable communities.
Announcing the award at the AMA26 National Conference in Melbourne last night, AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen said Dr Hansra had made an exceptional contribution to Australian medicine.
“Dr Hansra has demonstrated outstanding leadership across digital health, medical innovation and doctors’ wellbeing, while maintaining a strong commitment to patient care,” Dr McMullen said. “She has been at the forefront of shaping the future of healthcare and has helped thousands of doctors build meaningful and rewarding careers.”
Dr McMullen said Dr Hansra’s influence extended well beyond her own clinical practice.
“Through Creative Careers in Medicine, she has created a global community that supports doctors to develop new skills, explore new opportunities and navigate an increasingly complex healthcare system,” Dr McMullen said. “Her work supporting doctors, championing innovation and caring for vulnerable communities exemplifies the values this award seeks to recognise.”
A Sydney-based general practitioner, Dr Hansra is Chief Clinical Adviser (Medicine) at the Australian Digital Health Agency and has held several senior leadership positions across digital health and telemedicine.
She is the founder of Creative Careers in Medicine, a global community of more than 25,000 doctors supporting career development, professional growth and connection across the profession.
Throughout her career, Dr Hansra has worked across Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, homeless health, refugee health, occupational medicine and travel medicine.
Dr Hansra said she was “incredibly honoured and genuinely surprised” to receive the AMA President's Award.
“Medicine has given me opportunities I could never have imagined, and I've been fortunate to work alongside extraordinary colleagues who have challenged, inspired and supported me throughout my career,” Dr Hansra said.
“I've always believed that doctors can make a difference far beyond the consulting room, through leadership, innovation, education and advocacy, while never losing sight of the patients and communities we serve. This award really belongs to the many people I've had the privilege to work with over the years, especially those who have helped build Creative Careers in Medicine and Australian Medical Angels. Together, we've shown what's possible when clinicians come together with a shared purpose to improve healthcare.
“I hope this recognition also encourages more doctors to bring their unique skills into new areas of healthcare. Our profession has so much to offer in shaping the future of medicine, and I hope more clinicians feel empowered to explore the many ways they can make a difference.”
