Tenders are now open for the design and construction of a jetty and pen replacement project at Hillarys Boat Harbour and a jetty replacement at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour.
Both are popular locations for locals and tourists with Hillarys generally receiving more than five million visitors a year and Fremantle Harbour receiving about 1.5 million.
This is the biggest jetty upgrade project undertaken at Hillarys in more than a decade with works to be staged across three years.
Stage 1 involves the construction of a realigned 3.5-metre-wide central floating walkway which will provide new dedicated penholder access.
The next two stages of the project, planned for 2022 and 2023, will see the area's existing jetties (F, G, H and J) demolished and replaced with modern, low maintenance, floating infrastructure, connected to a new walkway and housing a total of 115 pens.
The reconfiguration was the subject of consultation with harbour tenants and penholders.
More than $6 million of funding for the Hillarys project was allocated as part of the WA Recovery Plan.
Jetty 3 at Fremantle is currently in poor condition with half of its berths decommissioned.
A replacement jetty with a modern floating pen system accommodating approximately 45 new berths is expected to be completed by 2023.
The McGowan Government has allocated $5.5 billion to the WA Recovery Plan to support the economy and local jobs through COVID-19.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"Both Hillarys and Fremantle boat harbours are much loved by locals and tourists alike.
"They are the first point of call for many recreational vessels and commercial fishing, charter and tourism operators, while also providing a home for many small local businesses.
"This is a significant investment in marine infrastructure at Hillarys and Fremantle through the WA Recovery Plan and capital works program that will stimulate the economy and support local jobs."
As stated by Hillarys MLA Caitlin Collins:
"Hillarys Boat Harbour is a much loved destination and averages about five million visitors each year.
"This is the biggest upgrade to the Hillarys Boat Harbour in over a decade and, combined with the tourist walking trails we launched last year, will continue to encourage more people to come and enjoy this beautiful seaside spot."
As stated by Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk:
"Fremantle is a beautiful place to visit in its own right, however, it's also the launching spot for many day trips off to Rottnest.
"This new jetty will mean more opportunities for boaties to visit Fremantle while also being able to plan trips out on the water."
