The Australian Border Force (ABF) has apprehended 15 illegal foreign fishers off the Maningrida coast and seized 120kg of sea cucumber, as operations targeting illegal fishing continue across the Northern Territory.
On 25 June 2025, ABF vessel Roebuck Bay detected and intercepted two fishing vessels in the vicinity of Maningrida, NT suspected of conducting illegal fishing activity.
Officers boarded and inspected the two vessels, identifying 120kg of sea cucumber, 110kg of salt used to preserve catch and a variety of fishing equipment.
In consultation with Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), and following consideration of the operational circumstances, authorities seized the fishing equipment, sea cucumber and salt.
The two vessels were also seized and disposed of in accordance with Australian law.
Authorities transported all 15 crew members to Darwin where they will be investigated by AFMA for alleged offences against the Fisheries Management Act 1991 (Cth).
Op LUNAR Commander Tracie Griffin said the ABF is more serious than ever about cracking down on illegal foreign fishing in the Northern Territory.
"Our officers are patrolling the north with precision and persistence, any vessel fishing illegally in Australian waters can expect to be found," Commander Griffin said.
"This latest apprehension should stand as a warning to those planning to profit illegally from our marine environment. A plan to fish illegally is a plan to lose your catch, your crew, and even your boat."
