$15,000 scholarships to re-train former nurses

Former nurses are eligible for $15,000 scholarships to re-train through La Trobe's world leading nursing program and re-join the nursing workforce in just 16 weeks.

Twenty-five scholarships will be provided annually over four years through La Trobe University's Rural Health School, Australia's largest rural health school, as part of the Victorian Government's Free Nursing and Midwifery initiative.

La Trobe Rural Health School Dean, Professor Jane Mills, said the scholarships provide a unique opportunity for former nurses to quickly and easily return to nursing and pave a new career in healthcare.

"Nursing looks different in 2023. For regional nurses, there are more jobs close to home in more settings, like aged care or GP clinics, and there's more flexibility to work around your family and life commitments," Professor Mills said.

"Nurses who re-train with La Trobe are set up for a great career, starting with world-leading nursing education and a placement with a reputable local workforce partner."

"It's great to work with the Victorian Government to meet health workforce needs, particularly in our regional and remote communities."

All Victorian and border community former nurses are eligible to apply by 31 May 2023, with priority given to non-metropolitan applicants.

The scholarships cover fees for a 12-week, self-paced online program, leaving more than $6,000 to the recipient for costs associated with a four-week placement.
