16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

Narrandera Shire Council

Narrandera Shire Council and The Domestic Violence Advisory Committee proudly announce their collaboration in support of the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign. This international movement is a crucial opportunity to raise awareness and call for an end to violence against women and girls. The campaign will commence on 25th November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and will run until 10th December, Human Rights Day.

To provide easily accessible assistance for those in need, the committee and council staff have come together to print resource cards. These cards will be strategically placed in shops and public locations throughout the Narrandera Shire, allowing individuals to find crisis services if required quickly. Moreover, the resource cards feature QR codes linking to Narrandera Shire Council's Domestic Violence information and support services, which are currently being updated to ensure accurate and immediate support for those seeking assistance.

As part of our commitment to supporting the 16 Days of Activism, we urge local businesses to participate in our initiative. We kindly ask them to host one of the 25 purple candles, symbolising the tragic impact of domestic and family violence. Each candle represents one of the 25 domestic and family violence-related deaths in NSW in 2022. By hosting these candles, businesses will show their solidarity and raise awareness of this critical issue within our community. If your business is interested in hosting a candle, please phone 02 6959 5510.

Councillor Tracey Lewis expressed the significance of utilising the 16 Days of Activism campaign to shed light on domestic and family violence. "We must recognise that domestic and family violence affects anyone, regardless of age, gender or background. The children of a domestic violence situation carry that burden just as heavily as adults. It is a silent killer that thrives in silence. We need to break the cycle of violence by speaking up and speaking out".

Narrandera Shire Council and The Domestic Violence Advisory Committee invite the community to join them in creating a united voice against gender-based violence during the 16 Days of Activism. This is an opportunity for us all to stand together and support those affected by domestic and family violence.
