- Multimillion-dollar upgrades set to get underway at the Broome Turf Club as part of the Cook Government's commitment to regional racing
- Kimberley racing industry contributes an estimated $22.9 million to the WA economy each year and supports hundreds of jobs
Thousands of people are expected to turn out today for the Kimberley's headline racing event - the Broome Cup.
But in an early triumph for the Broome community and racing industry, the State Government has announced that the town's premier racecourse will soon undergo a $2.6 million makeover as part of the $25.2 million Royalties for Regions Racing Fund (RRRF).
The stables, some facilities and jockey accommodation will be upgraded as part of the Broome Turf Club revamp. The RRRF will also fund key infrastructure projects at 24 regional thoroughbred and harness racing club venues across the State.
The Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety is managing the RRRF initiative, and the projects will be delivered via Racing and Wagering Western Australia in consultation with race clubs.
The Broome Cup generates substantial social and economic benefit for the State, with racing in the Kimberley region accounting for around $22.9 million of the estimated $1.3 billion that the racing industry contributes to the WA economy each year.
As stated by Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia:
"Broome is one of WA's most iconic destinations and the Broome Cup has helped put it on the map - attracting big crowds every year, boosting tourism, and supporting hundreds of local jobs.
"The $25.2 million Royalties for Regions Racing Fund will not only help refresh the Broome Turf Club but secure the future of horse racing in the Kimberley.
"Regional racing clubs bring our communities together and this commitment shows the State Government is backing racing for the long run."
As stated by Regional Development and Kimberley Minister Stephen Dawson:

As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:

"Today is the culmination of a fantastic week of racing, which also included the popular Ladies Day at the Broome Turf Club on Tuesday, drawing thousands of racegoers.
"Our local racing industry plays a significant role in strengthening the regional economy, driving tourism, and supporting nearly 200 full-time jobs."
As stated by Racing and Wagering Western Australia CEO Ian Edwards:
