The Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters is holding two days of public hearings on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 October as part of its inquiry into the 2022 federal election.
On Monday, the Chair of the Committee, Ms Kate Thwaites MP, expects to hear a range of views on topics including political donation laws, funding of elections, and 'truth in political advertising' during academic and civil society roundtables.
On Tuesday, the Committee will discuss the role of digital platforms, social media and media in elections, with the Digital Industry Group Incorporated, followed by representatives of the Australian Communications and Media Authority, the University of Canberra's News and Media Research Centre, Free TV, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the ABC and Reset Australia.
Ms Thwaites said 'Our inquiry has so far received hundreds of submissions with ideas about our electoral system and areas for change. These hearings provide an important opportunity for the Committee to dig deeper into these ideas as we work towards forming our recommendations to the Parliament'.
