2026 Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards Open

Dept of Education, Skills and Employment

The awards aim to ignite a love of language among young Australians, encouraging them to share their thoughts, feelings and experiences through poetry as they explore their literary potential.

First established in 1984 with just 300 entries, the awards now attract tens of thousands of submissions from school students across the country. The competition also has a strong and dedicated following among teachers, whose support continues to drive its success. The Department of Education is a proud sponsor of the awards.

Students are encouraged to draw inspiration from anywhere their creativity leads them. For those seeking a starting point, this year's optional theme is "The Traveller", inviting young poets to explore journeys, experiences and stories that spark their imagination expressed in any poetic form they choose.

Entries for the 2026 competition close on 30 June 2026.
