The Rockliff Liberal Government's social and affordable housing program is continuing to deliver more homes for Tasmanians on the Housing Register.
''Today I inspected the site of a 22-unit development in Chigwell that, once completed, will provide housing for priority applicants from the Housing Register,'' Minister Barnett said.
''Homes Tasmania has provided funding of nearly $5 million towards the development, which is being delivered by Centacare Evolve Housing and builders Fairbrother Pty Ltd, and is due for completion in September.
''The development, in Allunga Rd, Chigwell, will be a multi-storey building comprising 19 two-bedroom units and three one-bedroom units.
''Our ongoing partnership with the state's Community Housing Providers, such as Centacare Evolve Housing, is critical to our program of increasing the number of social housing properties in Tasmania.
''This development demonstrates exactly what our social housing program is all about – delivering safe, secure, stable and appropriate homes for vulnerable Tasmanians,'' Minister Barnett said.
The funding for this development was provided under the Community Housing Growth Program, which will deliver more than 1,000 new social housing properties around the state by the end of 2023.
The units are being developed on land owned by Homes Tasmania and will be subject to a 40-year ground lease to CEH, which will be responsible for managing and maintaining the properties.
CEH is one of the state's Tier 1 Community Housing Providers and manages about 2,900 social housing properties around the state, including more than 1,200 on behalf of Homes Tasmania.
Developments such as these show that the Tasmanian Government's social housing construction program is working.
The next round of the Community Housing Growth Program will start soon with Community Housing Providers, not-for-profit organisations and Local Government organisations submitting expressions of interests to partner with Homes Tasmania to build even more social housing dwellings.
The $45 million in funding under round two of the CHGP will deliver at least a further 200 new homes for Tasmanian families in need.
The Community Housing Growth Program is a rolling capital program that is underpinning a strong pipeline of construction works, providing industry confidence and getting Tasmanians into homes sooner.
This is all part of the Rockliff Liberal Government's record 10-year, $1.5 billion housing package, being managed by our new housing authority Homes Tasmania, to deliver 10,000 new social and affordable homes by 2032.
