23 people charged after shoplifting operation at Wollongong

More than 20 people have been charged during an operation targeting shoplifting in Wollongong.

The shoplifting operation was conducted by officers from the Wollongong Police District's Proactive Crime Team, yesterday (Wednesday 8 June 2022) in the Wollongong CBD.

In total, 23 people were apprehended after allegedly shoplifting items, mainly consisting of groceries. Of those, 14 people were issued Court Attendance Notices, while seven were issued Criminal Infringement Notices for shoplifting.

Two youths were dealt with in accordance with the Young Offenders Act.

Items of note include:

  • Just after 11.30am (Wednesday 8 June 2022), a 39-year-old woman allegedly stole a $500 jacket from a store on Crown Street. Officers arrested the woman about 1pm. She was issued a Court Attendance Notice for larceny and will appear in Wollongong Local Court on Monday 26 July 2022. The jacket was returned to the store.
  • About 1.40pm (Wednesday 8 June 2022), it will be alleged a woman filled a backpack with groceries at a supermarket in Crown Central, Wollongong, worth $204, and did not pay for them. Police spoke with the 31-year-old, who was issued a Court Attendance Notice for shoplifting. She will appear in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 5 July 2022.
  • About 2pm (Wednesday 8 June 2022), a man was allegedly seen trying to leave a supermarket without paying for items. Officers attended the supermarket and spoke with the 22-year-old man, who was allegedly in possession of the stolen items, as well as a quantity of cannabis. The man was arrested and charged with shoplifting, possess prohibited drug, and contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (domestic). He was granted conditional bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Thursday 23 June 2022.
  • About 2.30pm (Wednesday 8 June 2022), a 22-year-old woman allegedly stole almost $320 worth of clothing from a sports store. The woman was issued a Court Attendance Notice for shoplifting and is due to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 14 June 2022. All items were recovered.

Similar operations are expected to continue in the future.
